200 Million FaceTime-Enabled Devices in 2012?

By the end of fiscal 2011, Apple will have an installed base of some 85 million FaceTime-enabled devices as the company’s nascent video conferencing platform gathers momentum. This according to Barclay’s analyst Ben Reitzes, who expects Apple to sell about 50 million FaceTime-compatible iPhones in fiscal 2011 along with 15 million FaceTime-compatible iPods, 12 million FaceTime-capable Macs and 10 million FaceTime-compatible iPads.

And by the end of fiscal 2012, said Reitzes, that installed base will have reached over 200 million devices, driven by what he called the “FaceTime networking effect” that encompasses the better part of Apple’s consumer product line–something the company’s rivals may not be able to duplicate with video conferencing apps of their own.

“While Android and competitive devices either have or are working toward incorporating a similar feature, we believe this particular feature benefits from Apple’s vertically integrated model,” Reitzes said. “Experiences across disparate hardware platforms tend to vary–with Apple’s one of the most reliable in our trials. Also, this feature allows Apple to mine the millions of iTunes users who have Apple ID’s–and provide an attractive feature across devices that can be put into use immediately. We believe the ‘FaceTime networking effect’ could enhance a halo effect on Macs and iPads as the feature becomes available.”

Oh, and that FaceTime-compatible iPad that Reitzes says Apple will sell 10 million of? He expects it to be announced over the next month with a shipping date near the end of March or early April. And like most folks, he assumes it will include a thinner and lighter design, front and rear-facing cameras, a USB port, and an iPhone-like high resolution display.

Is There a Verizon iPad in the Works or Not?

While most of the talk on Tuesday was about the arrival of the Verizon iPhone, there is another wireless product in the Apple lineup.

You might have heard of it: The iPad.

Indeed, Verizon apparently wants to offer such a product, with the CFO of Verizon Wireless parent Verizon Communications telling Bloomberg that the company would offer such a product at some undefined point in the future.

But a Verizon Wireless representative declined to comment on the Bloomberg report and also declined to comment about its iPad plans. An Apple representative also declined comment.

In fact, the iPad is already sold at Verizon stores.

But it is a Wi-Fi-only model that is paired with a Verizon portable hotspot. The wireless carrier certainly could keep offering it in just that fashion, but it also might make sense at some point to sell a model with a connection to Verizon’s network–something which is currently offered only via AT&T.

It has the exclusive on the Xoom and is likely to be the first with a Honeycomb-based Google Android tablet for some time, making the need for a Verizon-connected iPad perhaps less critical.

Also, because the Verizon iPhone can act as a portable hot spot, customers could easily share that device’s Internet connection with their iPad. Verizon has not said how much it will charge for either its iPhone service or how much the additional charge will be to use its iPhone as a hotspot.

Analyst: All the iPad Contenders Are Pretenders

There were dozens of tablets on display at CES last week, but none matched the iPad, which, according to Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore, will retain its lead in the space for the foreseeable future. “We found nothing at CES that reduces our optimism for Apple and its growing lead in the converged mobility market,” Whitmore said in a note to clients today. “In the tablet space, [the] iPad remains the gold standard and we believe the 50+ tablets coming to market this year will battle for second place.”

Taking first place is highly improbable, because by launching the iPad when it did, Apple claimed the lead not just in the tablet market, but in a handful of other areas on which that market depends–user experience, content acquisition and integration, and supply chain and build cost.

Whitmore figures Apple has a 12-18 month lead versus competitors on content and apps, and a multiyear lead on other media acquisition and integration through iTunes. He suggests that its early investment in capacitive touch technology and prepayments to touchscreen suppliers in order to guarantee supply will give it a meaningful cost advantage for some time.

And then, there’s the obvious: The iPad has been shipping for nearly a year, and its successor is already in the pipeline. “We expect iPad 2 to ship this spring, before most vendors will be introducing their first generation tablet,” said Whitmore. “For instance, Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb will ship in late 1Q at the earliest, suggesting meaningful [tablet] volumes won’t ship until 2H-11. We expect HP to announce its Palm Tablet in early February with significant volume shipments ramping in 2H-11. By then, iPad 2 will have been shipping for 3-6 months and its massive developer support lead will have expanded.”

The Mysterious Case of the “iPad 2″ Cases

Protective cases purportedly made for a new version of the iPad, posted for sale on Chinese e-commerce site Alibaba.com, have fueled some of the latest speculation about the rumored sequel to Apple’s red-hot tablet computer. In fact, they drew enough attention that someone with pull appears to have objected to the listings.

Apple has yet to publicly disclose any plans for an iPad 2. But gadget bloggers in the last week seized on pictures from Alibaba.com, a trading platform for smaller businesses in and outside China, as evidence of the new features that a second-generation iPad might have. In particular, they said the cases proved that the iPad 2 will include a camera on its back surface, since circular holes were depicted on the backs of the mostly silicon cases in the Alibaba listings. The cases were priced at a few dollars or lower and available in colors including bright pink and green.
