Ford Uses Wi-Fi to Customize Cars

The auto industry is getting fired up about wireless technology in cars and trucks but it’s not just for connecting passengers’ laptops or streaming Internet radio stations. [Note: Check out related video from Ford CEO Alan Mulally's appearance at D8 earlier this year.]

Here at an assembly plant outside Toronto, Ford Motor Co. (F) is using Wi-Fi transmitters to load customized phone and entertainment features into its Edge and Lincoln MKX crossovers as the vehicles chug down the production line.

The Dearborn, Mich., company is beaming software wirelessly to the vehicles to set up their information and entertainment systems for various markets: One Edge bound for the U.S. gets Ford’s 911 emergency assistance package while one to stay in Canada gets the option to speak in French and offers traffic information about Canadian roads.

Ford’s coming Explorer sport-utility vehicle and Focus compact car will have similar technology when they launch later this year.

But transmitting software for radio and phone systems may be just the start of the customization possibilities at car factories and dealerships.

On Language: Putting Government 2.0 in Context

Does the public need to understand what the term Government 2.0 means? Many look to my publisher, Tim O’Reilly, to explain, given that he has written eloquently about the topic and worked with Dick O’Neill to convene the Gov 2.0 Summit last year.

Einstein Would Have Used a Mac. John Lennon, Too.

Steve Jobs in a turtleneck and shorts?

What a great bit of history this is, and a nice Friday diversion. In the video embedded below, the Apple (AAPL) CEO introduces the company’s 1997 Think Different campaign. A key quote: “[Our new ad campaign] honors those people who have changed the world. Some of them are living, some of them are not. But the ones that aren’t –you know that if they ever used a computer it would have been a Mac.”

And another: “This is a very complicated world. This is a very noisy world and we’re not going to get a chance…to get people to remember much about us. No company is. And so we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us.”

Put Limewire music, YouTube video on iPod

1. Put music and videos from Limewire to iPod
Limewire is a download tool I assume lot of us use. I often use it to download free music and videos and put them on my iPod. I also often visit Youtube to watch videos and sometimes I download videos from Youtube to put on my iPod.
Search and download songs from Limewire. You may get songs in all sorts of formats, but not all formats are supported by iPod. Usually I select three formats: MP3, AAC and M4A formats that are supported by iPod and can be directly transferred to iPod using iTunes. For the detailed specs info, you can visit http://www.apple.com/iPod/specs.html. After you download the songs, open your iTunes, click "File" from the upper left corner, select "Add file to library", browse your computer hard drive and find the songs downloaded by Limewire, select the songs you prefer, click OK and the songs will be put in your iTunes. Then you can just transfer the songs to your iPod from iTunes.

2.Youtube video to iPod
I often visit Youtube to watch videos and sometimes I download videos from Youtube to put on my iPod. Youtube videos are in FLV formats, so I use a free online FLV converter to do the conversion:
Firstly, go to Youtube and open the page of the video you want to put on your iPod. And you will find the Youtube URL of this video to the right of the playback window. Then copy this URL. See the highlighted area in the figure below:

put Limewire music, YouTube video on iPod

Secondly, go to http://vixy.net/ , paste the copied URL into the URL field of this web page, and select "MP4 for iPod/PSP" from the "Converts to" drop-down list. Then click "Start" below this list to start the conversion. See the highlighted areas below:

put Limewire music, YouTube video on iPod

Finally, after the conversion, this website will provide a download link for you to download the converted MP4 file. When you see the link, you can just download the final file from the link, save the downloaded MP4 file on your computer and use iTunes to sync it on to your iPod.

Dell FY Q2 Revenues, Profits Slightly Above Estimates; Shares Fall

Dell (DELL) this afternoon reported results for its fiscal second quarter ended July 30 that were a tad above the Street consensus.

For the quarter, the PC maker posted revenue of $15.5 billion, up 22 percent from a year ago, and ahead of the Street at $15.2 billion. Non-GAAP profits of 32 cents a share topped the Street by two cents.

The company said it expects Q3 revenues to be up in the low single digits on a percentage basis sequentially.

In a statement Dell said that “the corporate client refresh is well underway,” and that “demand will continue through the next several quarters.”

People’s iPad App Free to Print Subscribers

Looks like People magazine’s rumored iPad standoff with the photo agencies that supply it with paparazzi shots is over. The publication’s app for Apple’s (AAPL) iPad (iTunes link) debuted early this morning, and with an interesting twist: A subscription-verification interface that permits current People subscribers to download the issues for free. Non-subscribers looking for the latest Lindsay Lohan rehab photos will need to cough up $3.99 per issue and they cannot subscribe via the app.

Seems resistance from photo agencies trying to squeeze People for some extra money to allow their images to be used on the magazine’s iPad app wasn’t quite as bad as it had been made out to be. Either that or the publication agreed to pay photographers an additional iPad usage fee that acknowledges the device isn’t simply a promotional tool, but a new distribution mechanism and revenue stream.

Notably, the People iPad app is the first Time Inc. (TWX) offering free to print subscribers. The rest of the company’s flagship mag iPad apps are expected to join it in the next 30 days or so. As will the rest of the publishing industry’s for-tablet offerings.

Red Bull Alert for Facebook Engineers: Mark Zuckerberg Promises Many More Feature Launches Coming Soon to a Social Network Near You!

During his introduction of Facebook’s Places geo-location offering yesterday afternoon, like any good geek on launch day, CEO Mark Zuckerberg was hopping excitedly onstage about the rollout and promised more to come in the months ahead.

“We have a lot of other interesting launch nights coming out this summer,” he said to the crowd of media gathered in the decked-out cafeteria of the social networking behemoth’s HQ in Palo Alto, Calif.

Since summer is ending in a few weeks, he and I had a short chat after the presentation about exactly what that meant.

“This is just the start of a lot more to come, because I think it’s important that we bring out as many features and innovations as quickly as we can,” said Zuckerberg, whose kinetic demeanor appeared to be channeling a 12-pack of energy drinks.

He talked about a start-up night, as well as one devoted to Facebook’s recently released beta Questions product, which he said he thinks could be massive.

The feature, like Yahoo Answers or Quora, gives users the ability to get answers to their questions from friends and even the larger community.

“The way we do search right now doesn’t address exactly what people might be looking for,” said Zuckerberg. “Instead of messing around on Web pages, someday, you should put a request into a phone and have it beep with the right answer.”

I don’t think Zuckerberg was meaning to delivering a specific smack upside the head to Google (GOOG)–he must like the search giant a little since he has hired so many of its employees–although that’s the market that Facebook is aiming at, of course.

And, indeed, it’s aimed changing how search is done, using a smart melding of people knowledge and deep troves of data to deliver more than the brute-force results consumers get now via search.

Zuckerberg declined to name what else was up–”We have not made that public yet”–but it’s good to see a founder so engaged, in the style of Steve Jobs of Apple (AAPL), Jeff Bezos of Amazon (AMZN) and also, of course, the Google twins, Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

While Facebook was clearly riding in the wake of the innovation of others in geo-location–such as Foursquare–with its Places entry, the race might not always be to the swift.

In fact, Zuckerberg seems to be hoping it is to the pretty fast and very steady.

A Japanese developer NekoMiMi has achieved that with PSPTube. Here are the steps:
Download the PSPTube from here http://www.PSP-hacks.com/file/1225 and open the zip file. Now before putting it in your PSP open the PSPTube.cfg file and press ctrl + F, and type in "DEV" press until you find Dev id="".
Ok now go to http://www.youtube.com/dev create an account and insert the account in between the arentheses.
Extract the PSPTube from the 200over folder and put it in GAME352 folder (Set the Kernel to the 352) Now open it in the PSP and choose an internet connection with the Circle button, it may say no videos, press circle and you'll be able to search.

“We will look into this one by one,” said the official, who spoke on the condition that he not be identified.
A Google (GOOG) executive said the company hasn’t received any related communication from the government, and hence is unable to comment. Executives at Research In Motion (RIMM) and Skype couldn’t be immediately reached for comment.
The official said RIM has assured that it will “come up with some technical solutions” for messenger and enterprise email services next week.

Dell’s Streak: a Tiny Tablet That Takes Calls, Too

As a result, other companies, big and small, are racing to produce multitouch tablets that go beyond the narrow functions of e-readers such as Amazon’s (AMZN) Kindle. Like the iPad, they are meant for a wide variety of uses, including Web surfing, social networking, email, games, productivity, navigation, book reading, and playing music and videos. And, like the iPad, they will pose a threat to the primacy of the laptop for portable computing, and especially to the smallest laptops, the netbooks.

This week, a second big computer company, Dell (DELL), is joining the new tablet war in the U.S. But Dell’s first offering in the category, called the Streak—first introduced in the U.K.—is very different from the iPad, and somewhat peculiar. It’s much smaller—with just a 5-inch screen—and makes cellular voice calls, something the iPad can’t do.

It is really a tweener device, a design compromise. Depending on how you use it, the Streak can be considered a giant smartphone or a minitablet. Dell is positioning it as a tablet, but, to me, it’s more of a very large smartphone, but one that, for many, will be too large to carry around comfortably.

Depending on how you buy it, the Streak can cost either less or more than the base $499 iPad. It goes on sale Aug. 13 at $300 if you sign up for a new two-year AT&T (T) contract, which must include a data plan. (The cheapest iPad with cellular data connectivity is $629.) Or, you can get a Streak for $550 without an AT&T contract. Dell says neither U.S. version can be used with any other phone carrier, though the $550 model can be used as a Wi-Fi-only device, just like the $499 iPad.

Ptech-JH

Dell’s Streak runs on Google’s Android operating system, with access to some 70,000 thirdparty apps available in the Android Market store.

The Streak will be available only through Dell’s website, not at any stores, not even AT&T’s.

The Streak runs on Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system, and has access to the 70,000 or so third-party apps available in the Android Market app store. But I couldn’t find, and Dell couldn’t identify, any apps written especially for its larger screen. In fact, a few Android apps I tested seemed to crowd all their icons into just a portion of the Streak’s screen, especially when the device was held vertically, leaving lots of white space.

The Streak’s 5-inch screen is much larger than the iPhone’s 3.5-inch display, or the 3.2-inch screen on the new BlackBerry Torch. But it didn’t feel radically larger to me than the 4.3-inch display on some of the newer Android smartphones, such as the HTC EVO, which, while bulky for a phone, is still much easier to fit in a pocket than the Streak is.

The Streak is a long, skinny device. It’s 6 inches long and 3.11 inches wide, about a fourth the footprint of the iPad, which isn’t meant to go in a pocket, but considerably longer and somewhat wider than the EVO, which is. It’s much lighter than the iPad, at just under half a pound, but heavier than many smartphones.

In my tests, I found I could carry the Streak comfortably in the pocket of loose jeans, or in a suit jacket’s inner pocket, but not in a shirt pocket or the pocket of more fitted pants. It would take up a lot of room in a small or medium-size woman’s handbag. And it looks somewhat ridiculous when held up to the ear to make a phone call.

And, despite the larger physical size of the Streak’s display, its screen resolution, which governs sharpness and how much content can fit on a screen, is lower than even the iPhone 4’s much smaller screen, and is too low to display high-resolution video (though an optional dock can output hi-res video to a TV.)

Also, the Streak comes with the outdated 1.6 version of Android, though Dell says it will eventually be upgradeable to the latest edition.

In my tests, the Streak delivered both moments of pleasure and moments of frustration. When held horizontally, the screen felt luxurious, with lots of room, and good sharpness and color, for playing video or viewing photos. Even in portrait mode, reading books using the Amazon Kindle app was a much better experience than on any smartphone I’ve tested, though not nearly as good as on the iPad or Kindle e-reader.

The screen also holds plenty of app icons and more large widgets than other Android phones I’ve tested. And there are convenient bars at the top for quickly checking notifications, adjusting wireless settings, managing screens and accessing apps that aren’t on the main screens.

The Streak also has generous memory for an Android phone. It comes with 19 gigabytes of total memory, including a removable 16 gigabyte memory card. Two gigabytes of the internal memory can be used to store apps—excellent for an Android phone, but much less than on the iPad.

Its 5-megapixel rear camera took sharp photos and fair videos, and phone calls sounded clear. The large screen was a big plus for Google’s free voice-prompted navigation app. Battery life was very good, easily lasting a full day, and the battery is removable.

But the Streak also crashed on me several times. On one occasion, it started vibrating endlessly, only stopping when I removed and replaced the battery.

The device has a front-facing camera—unlike the iPad, which has no camera at all. But video calling isn’t integrated, unlike on the new iPhone, and requires you to sign up for a third-party service.

Twice the device proclaimed it couldn’t find the memory card and had to be restarted before it could. Twice, the YouTube app failed to load any content.

Also, the buttons on the top edge for turning the Streak on and off and for taking pictures are very close together and easily confused for each other. And the camera button eventually stopped working for me altogether. The speaker, located on the back, sounded tinny when playing music. And it was too easy to block the rear camera with a thumb or finger when holding the Streak naturally.

Dell sees the Streak as a tablet first, with phone calling as a secondary function. It may well appeal to people for whom the iPad is too large to carry around, yet want some of the tablet experience coupled with a phone. But tweener devices can be hard to love and Streak buyers will have to overlook some of the shortcomings I encountered.

Welcome to the Schminternet!

Although Google CEO Eric Schmidt (pictured here) took pains in a press conference yesterday with Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg about net neutrality policy to distance the search giant from the idea that it could be part of any new “private” Internet, that did not stop a lot of pundits from crying foul.

And also making up one of the best monikers ever for the possibility of a new toll-heavy information superhighway.

That would be the Schminternet!

The term was a word coined by media blogger Jeff Jarvis of BuzzMachine, accidentally mangling Schmidt’s name perfectly when making a Yiddish joke in a post to Twitter: “The Schminternet=not the internet. Comes with new fees.”

It was only the beginning of the pointed tweets by Jarvis:

“If you take your iPhone from your wi-fi outside it moves from the internet to the schminternet?” and “So if you launch, say, a new video university, is that internet or schminternet?”

Indeed, the Google (GOOG) and Verizon (VZ) convoluted explanation of the plan left it open to such discomfort, because of the nagging notion that the public Internet would eventually get the shaft for a private one that had different rules.

Also left out of the Google/Verizon chit-chit: Wireless broadband, which is where all the action is happening today.

Would that be on the Schminternet? Or even multiple Schiminternets?

Noted Jarvis in a blog post today:

So, ol, grandpa internet may chug along giving us YouTube videos of flaming cats, but you want to get that while you’re out of your house? Well, that’s the nonnet. I can hear the customer “service” rep explaining this to us:

“Oh, no, sir. That’s not offered on the internet. That’s on the schminternet.”

You want something new? Anything created after 2010?

“Schminternet, sir.”

Jarvis and others are right to be questioning the Google-Verizon policy, since it seems to suggest a balkanization of digital distribution, which seems counter to Google’s stated interest in an open Internet system.

But, just in case, Jarvis–who penned the book. “What Would Google Do?”–has bought the Schminternet.net domain.

Where to download free iPod Videos

Free iPod Videos, Legal nano Videos, Places to get iPod, iPod nano Videos
1. The Internet Archive is great for old videos and movies. The Archive’s 256Kb MPEG4 Downloads are unfortunately not iPod-ready as previously thought. The format’s correct, but there are audio pops when played back on the iPod. You’re probably better off downloading the MPEG2 videos anyway. The 265Kb files were pretty low-res and it’s a snap to re-encode the MPEG2 files for your iPod with Aiseesoft Video Converter for Mac.
2. The Chronic..What?..cles of Narnia.
3. The iTunes Music Store’s podcast section is loaded with free videos.
4. Channel 101 and Channel 102 offer up some brilliant downloadable videos.
5. PodGuide.tv
6. Channel Frederator offers up some of the best short animations anywhere.

Illegal Places to Get iPod Videos
You’re probably familiar with most of these options, but if you aren’t then they’re new to you!
1. Search the BitTorrent network for iPod.
2. Check Podtropolis
3. The Pirate Bay!
4. Seriously, you should probably stick to LEGAL sources for iPod videos.

Downloading Free Music Without Fear
3hive.com: A great blog-style listing of free iPod-compatible songs offered by record artists and labels in an attempt to entice full-album purchases. Songs are in the MP3 format in a variety of bit-rates generally ranging between 128kbps and 192kbps.

Epitonic.com: Offers highly professional, artist-focused presentation of free digital music downloads in MP3 format, with biographical details and short previews for songs across a narrow collection of genres.

Freekidsmusic.com
: Along with its sister site Freechildrensmusic.com, provides a large variety of free MP3 format songs for young listeners.

Garageband.com: Not to be confused with Apple’s music creation application of the same name, Garageband.com collects and provides popularity charts of independent music, featuring over 125,000 bands.

Freekidsmusic - Download music

MFiles.co.uk: Provides free downloads of well-known classical music in MP3 format.

Music.download.com: The music-dedicated expansion of popular software download site Download.com offers free full-length MP3 songs across all major genres, even including Children’s, Spoken Word, Comedy, Folk and Religious tracks. Most tracks are indie.

PureVolume: Offers over 100,000 free songs for download, and captured many of the best users of what used to be MP3.com (before it was scrapped, sold, and completely changed).

PureVolume - Download music

RCRDLBL: An exclusively-online record label which provides free MP3 downloads of exclusive music from emerging artists.
Of course, if you can’t find the song you’re looking for on one of these free sites, you can always visit Apple’s iTunes Store or Amazon’s MP3 Store and make a purchase there. Though these aren’t as cheap as some of the questionable international sites listed in the prior section, they are an entirely safe and legal way to get access to over a million songs.

Free Music with a Catch: Ad-supported Sites
Years ago, the most common source of free music for your listening enjoyment was the radio. Radio stations were able to broadcast music from a wide range of artists at no cost to the listener. Instead they made money through advertising services. The “price” a listener paid to listen to free music in those days was having to endure listening to advertising interspersed with the music.
Recently, some web sites have begun to offer a similar business model: You can download free music, but this is either done through a client or web site with very proactive advertising (as opposed to the standard advertising on most web sites), or the music tracks themselves contain brief advertising spots placed at the beginning of each track.
Unfortunately, most of the sites that offer these types of services, such as SpiralFrog and Ruckus Networks (for U.S. college students) only offer their downloads in a Windows Media Audio DRM-protected format that is incompatible with iTunes or the iPod (or ironically, even the Microsoft Zune). Further, these tracks may not be burned to a CD. These sites are therefore generally of no value to iPod owners.
A notable exception is We7, a UK-based ad-supported site whose founders include Peter Gabriel. We7 provides downloads in a DRM-free 192kbps MP3 format, with the catch being that each track has a 6-12 second advertisement grafted onto the front-end. Ad-free tracks may be purchased outright, and We7 also offers a credit system whereby you can convert some of your tracks to ad-free versions once they have been in your library for 28 days or more. Since these tracks are in an open MP3 format, they can be played on just about any digital media player available.

We7 - Download iPod Video

Although primarily a paid subscription music service, eMusic.com provides a free ad-supported music service as well. In this case, the advertising is directed at the user via the ALOT toolbar which is installed in your web browser (compatible with IE6, IE7 and FireFox 2 only).

Downloading Free Podcasts: Radio for your iPod, iPod nano.
In addition to free music for your iPod, you can also download “Podcasts,” short radio-style programs produced by individuals and companies around the world. Many of these podcasts include music selections, and some are even dedicate to showcasing independent artists and providing music commentary and review.
While podcasts were originally organized in several independent podcast directories out on the Internet, the ITunes Store now includes an extensive catalog of podcasts which you can subscribe to directly via iTunes completely for free. Podcasts available through iTunes include both audio and video podcasts, and cover an extensive range of topics. Basically, anybody who has anything to say on a regular basis can create their own podcast and get “on the air” via iTunes quite easily.
A selection of music-specific podcasts can be found right in iTunes in the Music Podcasts Directory, which includes a comprehensive selection of music-related podcasts from music reviewers, traditional radio stations, and even directly from both small independent and more mainstream artists. So it helps you download your favorite iPod Videos

Well, look at that. Research in Motion (RIMM) co-CEO Michael Lazaridis has already lined up a guest lecturer for his Gulf state seminar, “Understanding the Reality of the Internet”: U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

In remarks at a news conference Thursday, Clinton said the United States will hold talks with the United Arab Emirates over its decision to suspend some BlackBerry services due to security concerns. “We are taking time to consult and analyze the full the range of interests and issues at stake because we know that there is a legitimate security concern,” she said. “But there is also a legitimate right of free use and access. So I think we will be pursuing both technical and expert discussions as we go forward.”

Slash and Burn: New Kindle Selling Like Wildfire

Looks like the $139/$189 prices Amazon gave its new Kindle e-book readers may have been the tipping point for mass adoption. Though they’ve been available for pre-order for just five days since the unveiling, both the 3G and Wi-Fi Kindles are sold out for their first August 27 ship date.

Amazon (AMZN) says that orders placed today will ship on or before September 4. Evidently, the company’s latest shot in the e-reader price war has found its mark.
